In this essay, Joyce ten Holter and I argue that the amazing complexity of the world in which we live need not be a source of paralysis when it comes to decision making and planning. On the contrary, a better understanding of its complexity can open new perspectives for action. If we recognise that social systems are dynamic, interconnected and continuously evolving, we also see that small interventions, new coalitions and different ways of thinking and doing can influence the direction of change. The future is not fixed. It unfolds in the choices we make today and the interactions that follow. By navigating step by step, learning from what works and what does not, we can give direction to change without claiming to control it completely. And perhaps, through that combination of direction, imagination and adaptability, we may eventually arrive – within the broad realm of possibilities – at a harbour we jointly consider desirable.

Van Toekomst Denken naar Toekomst Willen

“De toekomst ligt niet vast; zij ontvouwt zich in de keuzes die wij vandaag maken en in de interacties die daaruit voortkomen. Door stap voor stap te navigeren, lerend van wat werkt en wat niet, kunnen we richting geven aan verandering zonder te pretenderen dat we haar volledig beheersen.
